How to learn car driving: Most of us will learn car driving while coming to U.S from India, even though there are lot of variation in traffic rules and regulations between U.S and India. Though you were a good driver in India, it will be good if you take 1 or 2 driving classes from professional trainer initially to get accustomed to the US traffic rules. If you are confident enough, you can rent a car by using I.D.P and learn driving by taking help of any experienced driver.
Driving Classes: If you are planning to take driving classes from training professional then you can search driving school details in the web and can contact them. Number of sessions are completely depends on individual to individual. I took only 1 hour class when I came to U.S. Even in India I had never driven car. Just before I have come here I took just 15 hours training sessions in India. I don’t tell those classes helped me a lot, but to some extent they were useful. Training professionals will charge you 40-50$ per hour. There are driving schools which provide full courses also, if you would like to take you need to spend 300$-600$, may be 4-5 sessions each of 1-2 hours. In some places they will take care about the driving license procedure too, if you take complete course.
Required Documents to apply for Driving License:
- Social Security Number
- Personal Identification (Passport / Other Identification)
- Address Proof (Bank statement)
- Legal Proof (I-94 & I-797)
1) Vision Test: Officers will test our vision with the help of a machine. They will check how good our vision is by asking us to read some letters which we can able to see when we view through that machine. It’s almost like our normal sight check up
2) Road Sign Test(in some states only): In some states they will conduct road sign test too, just they will ask questions by showing road signs. We need to tell which sign indicates what
3) Written Test (Learner’s Permit): Before you give this test, need to study Driver’s manual / Driver’s guide thoroughly. You can get this book at your nearer D.M.V offices in your city or you can get the same as soft copy in the corresponding website too (Go to www.dmv.org for details). There will be 2 sections in the test, Signals test & Driving test. This pattern may vary from state to state. To clear this exam we need to get at least 75-80% (20 out of 25 questions should be correct). In some states they will conduct this test by giving physical question paper (Multiple choice), in some states they will conduct through online. If you pass the test then you need to pay 3-20$ approximately (based on the state) to take the learners permit. If you are planning to take road test with in 1 month then you are not required to take the driver’s permit card too. Then they will give a temporary license which is valid for 60 days. That will be a paper not the card.
4) Drive / Road Test: One of the Dmv officer accompany us to check our driving . Initially before they allow us to give drive test they would like to make sure that our vehicle is in condition or not by asking us to operate vehicle breaks, head lights, horn, other indicators, etc.car. Once they feel that car is in condition then inspector will sit in the first seat next to us and ask us to drive as per their orders. While we are driving they will observe carefully how we are driving and how quickly we reacting to the situations. If you do any mistake they will decrease the marks. In some states you will have parallel parking too. Since I took 3 minutes (max time to do parallel parking is 1.5 minutes to 2 minutes only) while doing parallel parking I lost 10 marks. So be careful while doing parallel parking. In some states there may not be parallel parking.
Important points while giving road test:
- Maintaining the speed.
- Following the road signs properly.
- Using signals where ever required(at some places not required for right turn).
- Observing the On coming (While taking left turns) and On going traffic (While taking right turns)
- Immediate action when emergency vehicle approaches

- Reversing the vehicle

Speeding – 3 points – If you drive above or below the posted speed
Careless & Imprudent Driving – 4 Points – If you don’t drive properly
Knowingly allowing an unlicensed driver to operate vehicle – 4 points – If unlicensed person was driving your car when police caught.

NOTE: Above information may vary from state to state and time to time, its completely based on my experience only.
