Driving License Transfer

One state driver’s license is not valid in other state, so we need to transfer the license to the current state by surrendering the other state license, when change from state to state.

Documents that are required to transfer Driver’s License are:

  • Identity Proof (Passport)
  • Social Security Number (S.S.N)
  • Legal Presence Proof (If presently working company name is mentioned on the visa then offer letter of the employer otherwise need to submit recent paystubs & new offer letter )
  • Address Proof (Bank statement / any legal document which shows current house address & should not be older than 30 days)
  • Out of state Driver’s License card (We need to return the out-of-state DL in most of the states)

Significant things when transferring out of state Driving License:

  1. In most of the states we need to take written exam again even for driver’s license transfer. Since all states will follow same traffic rules we no need to worry much, only posting speeds may vary from state to state). If we clear the test then they will issue the new License card immediately or they may mail it within 15-60 days of time, till then they will provide a temporary license which may valid for 60 days.
  2. In some states we need not give written exam also, while out of state driver’s license transfer.
  3. We need to pay 15-20$ to transfer the driver’s license. This charge may vary from state to state.
