Choosing an employer is the most significant thing in anyone’s professional career, that too especially in U.S we should be very cautious while selecting consultancies. Out of mine and my friends experience with consultancies, my sincere advice to the people who are applying for H1b is, think several times, pay extra attention and make a wise decision when selecting consultancy. First Impression: Few years ago people would have believed it’s really a big company, if that consultancy has a website. But now a days, consultancy that has no office (Physical location) is also maintaining very decent and incredible websites. I am not kidding; few months back my friend had asked me to enquire about some consultancy like how many employees are there and how big is it etc. So I went there to see the physical location of the office without calling them, I really surprised when I saw that office. In the website I saw that consultancy has 3 offices, one office as corporate office and rest as branch offices. I went to corporate office, I have seen different company name at the same address which they mentioned in the website. So I asked them for this consultancy they replied that is the one which I was looking for, I surprised how come both will be same because clearly I found 2 different names. I met one lady in the reception, she told me that they had some tie-up, and she has given some one’s number & some other sub branch’s address to get more details about the consultancy. I thought that it’s waste of time going over there since corporate office itself is not there for that consultancy how can we expect sub branches? So you should check whether real company is there or not? Don’t go by assumptions. Try to seek more information about the company like how many employees are there? From how long there are into consulting and how many people got H1B’s through that company etc..Probably look for the employee who is working with that consultancy if you or your friends aware of anyone, so that you could get a chance to know more about the company before taking further step.
Number of Employees & When they started: When I have attended the visa interview in 2006, visa officer was clearly asked about the number of employees of the company. Luckily my consultancy had more than 100 employees at that time so I survived. I won’t say that its mandatory that we need to have more employees, but it’s important many VO’s are very particular about it. When consultancy was established is also more important, it would be great if it has at least 4-5 years of history because visa officer would have some impression on that too.
Terms & Conditions: Before you commit to join in any consultancy ask them to interview you so that you will get confidence and it creates good impression to your employer as well. Once you select for that consultancy, have a brief discussion about the terms & conditions. Of course 50% of the desi consultancy people never rely on our terms they go with their own rules & regulations. It would be good if we have everything on paper, including salary, other allowances, leaves, insurance premiums, termination, traveling claims, accommodations, etc.
Green Card Filing: When you have plan for long stay / permanent stay in U.S, then you need to take care about the GC filing too. You need to check with the consultancy HR that for how many people they already applied for GC and are they any rejections? Since there is flexibility now a days to change the consultancy once we get the Labor approval no need to worry more .But having a word before, is always good.
Important Factors:
- Marketing Team: Check whether they have considerable marketing team (In your software area - Since some consultancies are strong in marketing in Testing, it will be difficult for them to place you if you are a JAVA professional) to place you in project in right time.
- Pay Stubs: Check some one (who have been working there ) about Salaries like are they paying correctly and in right time.
