In India its not necessary to buy a car since we will have very good transportation facility, but in U.S its almost compulsory to have a car. Though we have good transportation such as Subways, Commuter trains and buses in some cities, its required to have a car. Of course it may be difficult to buy a car immediately after you come here, since we won’t get auto loan easily. Here I am trying to give some tips for the people who are planning to buy a car: Initially our major concerns are what car we need to buy and budget of the car.
How to choose a car: Most of the Indians trust that Japanese cars will have more durability, of course it may be true too. That’s why most of our Indians like Toyota, Honda & Nissan. If you even think about other companies then you would have a choice of 60-70 different auto companies in U.S.A.
Type of the Car: Majorly there are 4 different types in cars such as Sedan, coupe, Convertible and SUV’s. Most of the people say that sedan will be best option for family. If you have kids then SUV will be the best option likewise for bachelors Coupe & Convertibles.
Budget of the Car: If you are planning to stay long time (3-5 years or more) in U.S then it would be better to buy a new car otherwise it’s better to go with used cars (ranging between 6000$ to 8000$). For Auto classifieds you can check http://www.cars.com/ and http://www.craigslist.com/
How to buy a new car: If you are planning for new car then you need to choose the company and the model (you can check the interiors and exteriors in the corresponding website). Once you select the model then you can approach different dealers to get the more details on price, delivery date and other options.
How to buy a used car: if you decided to buy used car then first you need to select the company and model of the car (Year of manufacturing). Once we select the model then need to find the present market price for that car( you can visit http://www.kbb.com/ to know the book value of the car). If you are planning to buy car from direct owner one should be very careful about the car condition, buying from known person is always good. Don’t buy a used car without car fax report (http://www.carfax.com/).
If you are planning to buy a car from dealer, you can check all the possible dealers to get more details to select the best car in all aspects. Before we buy we can have test drive to know the condition of the used car. Ofcourse we cant check the engine condition, to do that we need to have good mechanic along with us. It will be difficult I think. If you have any doubts on the engine you can take the insurance also from the dealer. For costly / recent model used cars dealers themselves will provide 3 months free guarantee (They will call them as certified cars).
After you have bought a car, need to change the name plate (Name plate change / car registration) on your name for that car. Since it will take some time to prepare the required documents to get that, It will be good to take the temporary registration (around 7$ per month) from the dealer itself. Dealer will charge you - Car price + Dealer charge + tax + name plate change (approximately) + temporary registration charge+ Insurance (engine / bumper 2 bumper) .
Name plate change (Car registration process): The required documents will vary from state to state for name plate change. Since dealer charges even name plate change charge from you, he will send the cheque (You will receive that through post along with the required documents)for the name plate change charge to hand it over in D.M.V while registration. Once we get those we need to club all the required documents along with the cheque and need to give them in the D.M.V office, if everything is fine then immediately they will issue 2 number plates (ready made), Just we need to fix them to our car. In case if we would like customize then we need to pay some extra amount and need to wait 1-2 weeks to get the name plates.
