According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the H1N1 flu strain is an apparent reassortment or mix of several strains of influenza A virus, subtype H1N1, which is endemic in humans, plus a strain endemic in birds and two strains endemic to pigs (swine).
Symptoms of the H1N1 flu include:
- Fever, greater than 100 degrees F
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Stuffy nose
- Chills
- Headache and body aches with fatigue
To keep the flu from spreading, the CDC suggests the following, so please follow these guidelines:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand gel, particularly after you cough, sneeze, or shake hands.
- Cover your mouth with a tissue or your sleeve (if you do not have a tissue) when you cough and sneeze. Throw used tissues in a trash can.
- Avoid close contact with ill people whenever possible
- Avoid touching your eyes, mouth or nose.
If you are ill:
- Stay away from work, school, or public gatherings.
- Don’t get on an airplane or another public transport.
- Limit close contact with others as much as possible.
- Stay at home.
- Seek medical care if you are severely ill, such as having trouble breathing.
Travel Guidelines:
At this time, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the CDC have not recommended that people avoid travel, but individuals planning to travel to affected areas are advised to be aware of the risk of illness and take precautions.
